With exponential growth over recent years, Breakthrough Atlanta has recognized the need for a second site to facilitate the program. The Atlanta Youth Academy, which now serves as Breakthrough Atlanta’s newest site, offers a very intimate setting and an opportunity to serve Atlanta’s metropolitan communities with a dynamic enrichment program on a larger scale.
Founded by Larry Teem, Atlanta Youth Academy began with one teacher and nine students, with Leroy and Donna Barber as its first administrators. Since its inception ten years ago, it has grown to its current 12 teachers and 130 students. The school is modeled after similar successful programs in other cities.
For students from pre-K through 8th grade, Atlanta Youth Academy provides quality educational facilities on par with top independent schools-facilities that Breakthrough Atlanta is proud to make use of. There is one big difference, however. AYA is designed for urban children and youth whose families believe in the importance of education but who do not have access, either financially or geographically, to excellent private schools. This philosophy also helps Breakthrough Atlanta reach more students.
The program at the Atlanta Youth Academy site operates in conjunction with The Lovett School site; therefore Breakthrough Atlanta is truly capable of “being in two places at one time.”
