Scholar Spotlight: Simeon

Meet Simeon, a 9th grade student at Chamblee High School. Simeon enjoys playing basketball, performing community service through his church, and participating in the Dekalb Alphas Mentoring Initiative through the Nu Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Simeon attended Breakthrough Atlanta’s virtual summer program in 2020, and he was excited to attend in person this year. Simeon’s favorite thing about Breakthrough is the community atmosphere.

“You are always connecting with old friends and meeting new ones over the summer,” he said.

Simeon’s teaching fellows describe him as a natural leader in the classroom. Throughout the summer, Breakthrough students make friends, explore college and career options and get a jumpstart for the upcoming school year. They study math, science, social studies and English language arts, and participate in fun enrichment classes.

Simeon shined in English and math. “Simeon came into the summer highly motivated and ready to participate in my class. His hand was perpetually raised, and his contributions were all incredibly thoughtful,” said his English teacher, Ms. Sriraman. Simeon’s math teacher, Mr. Eraso, said, “Simeon is also excited to learn and always seeks out an explanation for the correct answer, which is what mathematics is all about!”

Simeon would like to attend the University of Georgia, but he’s also excited to learn about colleges outside the state of Georgia. He aspires to own his own business or have a career in the sports industry.
