A Taste of College

No amount of online research can replicate the experience of stepping onto a college campus. That’s why Breakthrough Atlanta facilitates campus visits throughout the year for our program’s high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Not only do students learn about courses of study and future career opportunities, but they also learn about personal development and social engagement opportunities like extracurricular sports and activities and Greek letter organizations.

By visiting in person and meeting with college faculty and students, our high schoolers experience firsthand the culture and atmosphere of the school,” said Breakthrough Atlanta College Prep Programs Manager Chasity Knight. “These visits help them determine the attributes of colleges that align with their personal and professional preferences and goals.

Recently, students visited Mercer University in Macon, and a group will travel to Athens in May to tour the University of Georgia.

“It’s great that Breakthrough Atlanta is located near so many wonderful colleges and universities,” Chasity said. “We can give our students a taste of many different options.

In addition to tours, Breakthrough Atlanta takes students to college fairs and facilitates visits from college representatives.

We want them to see various options to show them that college is accessible,” Chasity said. “There’s a college out there that’s right for each of our students.”

Help make college a reality for more students.
