Graduate Spotlight: Elizabeth

Elizabeth graduated in May 2021 from Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, and her accomplishments are remarkable. She graduated with honors and has already earned college credits through a dual enrollment program.

Elizabeth started on her path to college when she joined Breakthrough Atlanta in the summer after her 6th grade year.

“With encouragement and information from the Breakthrough staff, I have been motivated to achieve at every level during school,” Elizabeth said.  “I have gained a long-lasting relationship with friends and a network of professional resources who have shown care and concern for not only my education, but the personal wellbeing of me and my family. I am truly grateful to be a part of the Breakthrough family.”

Elizabeth was President of her senior class and participated in a number of school and community activities. She’s a talented singer, and she’s also an active member of her church community and has performed over 100 hours of community service. What’s more, Elizabeth has accomplished these things while also holding a part-time job.

Elizabeth recently started college at Fort Valley State University, where she will study psychology and music therapy. She looks forward to getting involved in campus activities and hopes to study abroad.

“It is my aspiration to change the world in unimaginable ways while being an advocate for mental health and equality,” she said.

As she reflects on her Breakthrough experience, Elizabeth aspires to pay it forward.

“It is my goal to be able to give back and help others repeat the words ‘College. Period.’ and to be able to believe that they can achieve it.”
